GOLD TEST NEEDLES Set of 5 - 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K and Silver
Used with test stones and testing solutions to determine the contents of gold.
Pick up the touchstone and the test needle that corresponds to the marking on the gold.
For example, if you want to test the purity of an item that is marked as 14k, then you will want to use a 14k test needle.
Since the test needle is from a known source that is knowen to be 14k, it can be used for comparative analysis.
Using Test needles to determine the Karat of Gold and Silver
The test needles are used to compare the reaction of the test solutions to a known Karat of gold or silver with the reaction to an unknown Karat gold or silver sample.
- Find a spot on the piece you are testing and rub it on the test stone.
- Next to the mark from your test piece rub the test needle with the nearest karat that you think your test piece is.
(for silver you only test for result and do not need to select a Karat Value but you do need to select the solution for testing silver) - place a drop of solution with the nearest Karat rating that you think your test piece is (or the silver solution) to both marks at the same time.
- If the test item mark is disolved try a lower Karat solution (or the item is not gold or silver)
- If the test mark and the needle mark colors do not match try another needle until it does.
(When testing silver you will need to follow the color chart on the instructions that are included with our test kits or you can purchase them by clicking here)
- White and green gold react slower, but will still disolve or leave a brown mark after applying the solution.
